To remind you of the value of writing postcards to voters, below is a quote from Robert Hubbell’s newsletter of Tuesday, February 18, 2020. It will give you heart!
Why writing postcards to voters matters
I know that many of you have written thousands of postcards to voters urging them to vote. We hear anecdotes of voters showing up at the polling booth with postcards in hand. It can make a difference in swing states and close elections. But you might be interested in hearing about a note I received from a reader in California today.
The reader said she was feeling particularly depressed by the actions of Barr and Trump at the end of last week relating to Roger Stone and Flynn. Trump’s improper use of the presidential limo to do a victory lap at the Daytona 500 was salt in the wound. Then she picked up her mail from a P.O. box and found a postcard with a drawing of three finches on the front. She assumed it was from a “birding friend.” When she turned it over, it said,
Hello Friend.
I care deeply about our democracy and would like to encourage you to vote by mail now or vote in person Tuesday, March 3rd. Please elect Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar to Congress. Everyone deserves quality public education and affordable health care.
Thank you! Carrie.
The postcard was sent from Cedar Rapids, Iowa to the blue state of California. As the reader said, “What a remarkable gift, after all this time, to be on the receiving end of a PostCards to Voters missive. Unexpected, and inspiring.”
Postcards not only increase voter awareness about upcoming elections, but they are an act of grace during a challenging time in our democracy. So, for all of you who send postcards into the void, know that your efforts are helping in ways you cannot imagine. Thank you all for doing your part to help restore decency, civility, and community to our nation.
